A Very Special Megillah
Mechina children had the unique experience of getting to see a handwritten Purim Megillah during class this week. The Megillah, brought in by one of the children's grandfather, is a family heirloom that has been passed down for generations, making it at least several hundred years old. Fortunately Rabbi Micah walked by as the children were having this special experience and was able to answer a few questions about the writing and also chant the first verse of the Megillah. It was an honor for Rabbi Micah and a truly exciting experience for the kids.
This short anecdote really highlights the menschlichkeit value of "Kavod." We usually translate Kavod as "respect" but it also means "honor." The fact that this Megillah scroll has survived for so many years is because of the Kavod that Jews have for our sacred texts. Today, Mechina children exhibited the value of Kavod by listening to the story of the Megillah scroll and asking lots of great questions.
