Life Lessons: 7th Grade Shoah Project

In 7th grade Jewish Studies students study the Shoah/Holocaust. The big idea that informs their study of this complicated topic is the importance of individuals: individual choices, individual stories, and individual acts. The final project of the Shoah unit involves listening to a survivor's entire testimony and turning that testimony into an interactive format: a e-book or a blog. In reflecting on their Shoah studies and on the project in particular students reported learning a series of important life lessons. Here are some of the lessons they expressed learning:

  • Say "I love you" before you leave
  • Valuing people's human rights is essential
  • Take risks to do what's right
  • The value of perseverance
  • The extraordinary value of one decision
  • Be a participant in life
  • Don't take things for granted
  • Kindness is critical
  • Treasure your family
  • Never give up
  • The importance of telling your story
  • Life is hard but doable
  • Once a Jew, a Jew you stay
  • You can't escape the past but you can change the future
  • None of us know what's coming
  • Every life matters
