Project IMPACT 2014 Philanthropic Allocations

Below is a memo from Samara Schwartz, The Davis Academy's 7th grade Jewish Studies teacher. In it she reports on the outcome of the Davis Academy class of 2015's Project IMPACT philanthropic allocations.

One of the best parts of the year is watching Davis Academy students fulfill their obligation to tzedakah through Project IMPACT.  In past years, we have supported many fine organizations that are dear to our hearts, and make the world a better place.

This year we will be supporting the following organizations.

Locally, we are supporting CURE Childhood Cancer.  CURE Childhood Cancer is dedicated to conquering childhood cancer through funding targeted research and through support of patients and their families.  CURE Childhood Cancer believes that childhood cancer can be cured in our lifetime.   Particular thanks go to Sy Alifeld, Jack Pines, and Mikey Kobrinsky for bringing this organization to the table this year.

Nationally, we are supporting the Make-A- Wish Foundation.  Make-A-Wish grants the wish of a child diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition in the United States and its territories, on average, every 38 minutes. They believe that a wish experience can be a game-changer.  It remedies the ultimate injustice – children suffering.  Thank you to Shayna Fraley and Sarah Rosenbloum for this year’s campaign.

In Israel, we are supporting Bracha.  One of the only organizations of its type, Bracha focuses on women who carry, or may carry, the BRCA gene, making them more susceptible to breast cancer.  It encourages genetic testing for the gene, and provides medical and emotional support to women who have been diagnosed as having the gene.  They are inspired by the Jewish value of pikuach nefesh to use medical technology to save lives in a proactive way.  Thank you to Noah Greenberg and Jake Rubin for their work on this campaign.

Once again, we are so very proud of the Davis Academy 7th grade, and their thoughtful engagement with Project IMPACT and the Mitzvah of Tzedakah.
