Courage

This week the entire Davis Academy Middle School took a field trip to see the Alliance Theater's performance of "Courage." The play, written specifically for a middle school audience, explores the lives of four students as they navigate the complexities of middle school life. The overall theme of the play is that takes courage to be oneself, to live fully, compassionately, and purposefully. It's a message that applies to all of us, including middle schoolers.

In true Davis fashion we didn't simply board busses, attend a play, and then return to school. Instead, a planning committee of middle school faculty orchestrated a beautiful day of learning. The day began with a specially themed tefillah service, continued with show itself, then included a special visit with the playwright (no other group in attendance had this honor). The Q&A with the playwright showed just how deeply many of students had experienced the play's message.

Following a relaxing lunch on the grounds of the High Museum of Art students participated in a series of faculty-led breakout sessions inspired by the play. Sessions focused on "communication," "stereotypes," and "values."

We returned to school for a closing session where leaders from a variety of Jewish community organizations (Temple Emanu-El, The Temple, The MJCCA, URJ Camp Coleman, and SOJOURN) shared personal stories of courage and how they inform their work in the Jewish community. The  conversations were lively and informative.

Any student that wishes to extend their learning from this dynamic day is welcome to do so by responding to "Courage" in an artistic medium of their choosing. Ms. Kendrick has all the information about how to pursue this special opportunity. In closing, here are some words from Ms. Kendrick that sum up the spirit of the day, " Our Davis values emanated forth from everyone & from every part of the day. So many students mentioned today how much they enjoyed hearing stories from their teachers and participating together in the partner activities! The Alliance leadership, our Jewish community leaders and Rabbinical leadership echoed the same sentiment as we raised our individual voices to share narratives and create a powerful collective identity of deep learners & thoughtful compassionate souls.  Shared learning is truly shared joy. We are truly blessed to have such a warm, caring, engaged "family" at the Davis Middle School!!!"
